Doce Robles Winery & Vineyard – 1995 - painting by Gail Hansen

The Doce Robles Estate is going on its 24th year in Paso Robles, CA. Thanks to Jim and Maribeth for keeping the good wine and good times a’ comin’! The painting (above) was illustrated by Gail Hansen, Maribeth’s mother, prior to the vineyard’s planting. Forever and always will it be the trademark and label that represents their fine wines.

Vineyard Vitals

Jim & Maribeth purchased their property 24 years ago in Paso Robles Wine Country. The vineyard today still consists of these plantings: Merlot, Syrah, Barbera, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Zinfandel. Seven years ago Jimmy added Malbec and Petite Sirah for a total of seven planted varietals across 36 acres. All in great standing and health!

In 2019, Doce Robles had one of the best grape growing seasons. With the increased hanging time the grapes characterized very pretty colors and ripened with strong fruit-forward flavors.

Next up this spring we’ll be pruning the vines, but even better yet, planting the estate vegetable garden aka “The Grocery Store!” Be sure to stop by the tasting room to purchase vine-ripened tomatoes or join us at a Rising Moon Sunset Series party for dinner!

Rain came our way thanks to a much needed Miracle March in San Luis Obispo County. The lack of moisture in February drove most of California into the Abnormally Dry category, according to the United States Drought Monitor. Nevertheless, another wet weather system favored us and saved our rainfall season. Now the weeds are growing like weeds…

“Manure Spreader”

Jim got to work composting the vineyard before March. Organic manure matter takes about 3-4 months to make. The soil was aerated and covered just in time for the rain.

NV Estate Sunset Red VI

A five varietal blend featuring Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Merlot, Syrah, and Barbera. It’s boldly fragrant, with aromas of black cherry, smoky cherry, tobacco, cedar, toasty oak, molasses, black tea, spice and a hint of very subtle mint. Darkly juicy and bold on the palate, with flavors of bold young blackberry, black cherry, Acerola cherry, young strawberry, dusty bramble, roasted fig, plum, black tea, hard leather, tobacco and subtle resin.

2013 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

Ripe Paso fruit jumps from the glass, black currant, raspberry, strawberry, exotic spice, cherry candy, hard leather, spice box and a hint of black pepper. Juicy and fresh on the palate, with flavors of Bing cherry juice, wild strawberry, spice box, raspberry, bramble, red currant, cranberry, leather, slate mineral and toasty oak.

2013 Estate Sy-Rific-Cab

A blend of 60% Syrah and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon. On the nose, this wine is lively, bright and full of fruit! Fresh blueberry, blackberry and raspberry lead the way. These are followed by jammy strawberry, sweet spice, red licorice and a hint of beautiful Indian incense. On the palate, this wine hugs the sweet spot between sweet and tart, savory and juicy, with flavors of young strawberry, blackberry reduction, cherry bark, red licorice, red apple jolly rancher, sweet spice and a hint of black pepper.

2013 Barbera

Fresh-baked homemade gingerbread with molasses is right there up front, and ripe fruit, stewed strawberry, and cherry follow behind with vanilla notes to close it out. The palate has a nutty medley of walnut and pecan with plenty of fruit -- blackberry and strawberry being the main flavors there. This wine has a nice medium body that fills the palate evenly without overpowering or being cloying.

HAPPENINGS

Critter Corner!

Irrigation Motor Bike Escort

Due to the increase in rain fall, we won’t need to irrigate the vineyards until May – much to Sophie’s disappointment. She just can’t wait to chase after her 3-wheeler into the vineyard with Papa Jimmy. On the other hand, we found her a ‘playmate’! We’re not pregnant yet but hopefully something will transpire this July/August. His name is Dillon…❤

Incognito Mode Minnie

Our tasting room kitty only makes an occasional nightly-ninja appearance. Although… if you visit her Wine Warehouse Kingdom, you’re sure to hear her meowing from up above the rafter, beyond her towering throne of barrels. She just loves her winery duties. Same old Min-Min.

“Restoration Project – Class of 1969”

Jimmy still has this old beauty, his Ol’ Massie Girl. She’s a 1969 Massie Ferguson 165 tractor, bought brand new by Jimmy’s father. It wasn’t the first tractor he drove, but the second, and at the very young age of 12 years old. Jimmy: “It was better than the 1st one because now we had powered steering, breaks, clutch AND more horse power.” Major repairs included a new engine but there is still plenty of work (if Jimmy gets any extra time!) to fully get her up and running again. Jim’s Jacobsen’s family has been farming for over 100 years! Join us for the Fall Wine Club pick-up party on Harvest Festival Weekend to celegrate these grand family farmed wines. October 17, 2020 - Please RSVP to the tasting room. (805)227-4766

A New Team Member!

Our tasting room attendant, Katy, had a baby during our 2019 harvest season. Pop by the tasting room and if she’s working you’re sure to meet Mr. George William. He is quickly learning the ropes on hospitality with his BIG smiles and BIG personality.
